The process is called pixilation. Small pin-sized laser points are applied to the skin by the laser. This preserves normal tissue between the points, accelerating healing time. The depth of penetration can be controlled depending upon what is being treated, and pulses can be “stacked” for deeper problems such as acne scars.

Pixel™ belongs to a class of lasers known as fractional resurfacing lasers. Instead of ‘lasering’ 100% of the skin with each pulse, these lasers cover a fraction of the skin. The two most popular lasers in this class are Pixel and Fraxel.

Most lasers use one solid treatment beam which effects 100% of the skin it comes into contact with. In contrast, Pixel™ is comprised of many smaller beams within the treatment area. Each beam covers a fraction of the skin. Areas of treated skin are surrounded by areas of 'un-lasered' skin resulting in an effective treatment that is less painful and has a fast healing rate.

Treatments last about 30-60 minutes and are somewhat painful, but less so when compared to other resurfacing lasers. Anesthesia is NOT required. After the procedure the skin will feel hot, like a bad sunburn. The next day the skin will be red, swollen and tender to the touch. For the next 2-3 days the skin will feel rough and begin to flake. By the 5th day the skin will be returning to normal. While this process is much less severe than traditional resurfacing lasers, patients do need to expect this healing process and plan their schedule accordingly.

The number of Pixel treatments required for best results depends on the starting point and condition of your skin. A series of 4 sessions is typically recommended. Clients with significant signs of aging, acne scarring, stretch marks or wrinkles will require more visits than others. Treatments are usually performed 4 weeks apart.
